From time to time, members may receive a letter in the mail asking them to confirm an account or loan balance. If that happens, don’t worry, this is a normal part of how we help protect the accuracy of member accounts.

Why We Send Account Verification Letters

In order to ensure the integrity of our members’ accounts, the Board of Directors for Scenic Community Credit Union enlists the services of auditors to perform account verifications. These auditors may periodically send letters to selected members asking them to confirm the accuracy of one of their account balances.

Not every member will receive a letter, and receiving one does not mean there is an issue with your account.

What Is Member Verification?

Member verification is a process used to confirm that the information on your account matches what our records show. This helps ensure everything is accurate and gives both you and the credit union added peace of mind.

If you receive a letter, it’s simply asking you to review the information provided and confirm whether it looks correct.

If you receive a verification letter, it may ask you to:

  • Review an account or loan balance listed in the letter
  • Confirm whether the balance is correct or incorrect
  • Sign and return the form if instructed
  • Note any discrepancies if something doesn’t look right

Some letters may only require a response if you notice an error, while others may ask for a response either way. This is why it’s important to read the letter carefully and follow the instructions provided.

What Audit Letters Will Not Ask For

Legitimate audit letters are limited in what they request. Auditors will not ask for:

  • Online or mobile banking usernames or passwords
  • Social Security numbers
  • Debit or credit card numbers
  • PINs or one-time security codes
  • Payments, transfers, or urgent action

If you receive a message asking for personal or sensitive information, it is not part of this verification process.

If you do receive a letter and have questions about its legitimacy:

  • Thoroughly read the document and review what it’s asking you to confirm
  • Call us directly using the phone number on our official website
  • Avoid using contact information listed in the letter until you’ve confirmed it with us

Our team can let you know whether a verification is taking place and help you understand next steps.
